Chauffeur
In different eras, the technologies of the era gives us certain jobs, this one is from the coal era!
When cars were first invented they used to run on steam engines. Unlike our modern engines which self-inject fuel through mechanical action, a steam engine needed to be constantly fed fuel - coal to keep it running.
Chauffage in French means heating. A Chauffeur literally meant stroker—a person who kept the flame burning.
Keeping a steam engine running took an incredible amount of work and Chauffeur were responsible for keeping the fire alive. This word was borrowed by English in 1896. As the automobile technology improved, there was no more need to keep the fire burning but the word remained in the language.
As the 1900s progressed, it began to mean a motorist or person responsible for driving a vehicle. The profession hinged around the vehicle, but what they did, changed radically with the improvement in technology.
