Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone was a mystic Italian Catholic Friar. In 1223 he arranged for the first Christmas live nativity scene. He was canonised as Saint Francis of Assisi in 1228 and was the founder of the Franciscans. He was one of the most venerated figures in Christianity.
Franciscans are a mendicant Christian order within the Catholic Church. They adhere to the teaching and spiritual discipline of the founder. The order does not allow members to own any property and also requires them to beg for food while preaching. There are several orders of Franciscan monks and one of them is known as the Order of the Friar Minor Capuchin.
These monks wear a robe that is blain brown with long pointed hoods hanging down their backs called Cappuccios in Italian.
When Coffee mixed with frothed milk was introduced in Italy, they found the colour of the coffee resembled that of the robes worn by the Capuchin monks. From there came the name of the drink Cappuccino. This word was then borrowed by English in the 1800s.
